Getting yourself in the great outdoors is easy. But, is there a way to make your outdoor experience better? Here are 5 ways to better enjoy the outdoors:
Take Someone With You.
While I spend quite a bit of time outside by myself, one thing that I really enjoy doing is taking people into the outdoors with me, especially if they usually do not venture out themselves. Sharing a hike, paddle, or bike ride with someone unfamiliar with the concept is pretty amazing, and usually they will want to go out again. I am constantly taking my children on new outdoor adventures, pushing my wife out of her comfort zone on hikes, and just getting my father outside in the woods. It's amazing to share what you love with others.
Leave Your Electronics at Home.
While I enjoy recording my stats with Strava, taking pictures with my iPhone, or setting up my tripod with my camera, sometimes it is good to leave the electronics at home and just BE in the woods. Slow down. Breathe it in. Enjoy the moment. Getting outside is not about likes on Instagram or getting the KOM on that part of the trail. Try it once in a while.
Go Someplace New.
Often I find myself heading back to the same places over and over. I have quite a few favorites, and they never seem to get old no matter how many times I have been there. That aside, break the habit and go explore. Cincinnati has a TON of great outdoor arenas, and even though I have lived in the area for a while now, I still have not seen them all. Enjoy your favorite spots, but remember to venture out once in a while.
Have Lunch Outside.
A great way to mix up a simple hike is to take your lunch with you. Hike or bike out into the woods, find a great spot to relax, and have lunch. This works perfectly with taking someone new into the woods, and also is great for kids. Having a hike to eat lunch gives you a goal to hike to, which is always a good idea when hiking with someone who doesn't enjoy the outdoors as much as you might. Keep in mind; Lunch outside doesn't need to be elaborate. Keep it simple. Sandwiches, juice boxes, and pour over coffee are all staples in my lunch outside kit. And remember, pack out what you pack in.
Make it a Habit!
Simple. Get outside and often!
Hopefully these simple steps help you enjoy the outdoors of our great area a little more!
