Twin Valley Trail Backpacking Trips & Workshops

DESCRIPTION:
Have you thru-hiked your local backpacking trail? Now is your chance! Join Great Miami Outfitters in thru-hiking our Twin Valley Backpacking Trail. This trip is great for the beginner toexperienced backpacker! See your local trail from a new perspective or learn the skills required for spending time in the wilderness. Come meet new people, learn new tricks, and share your stories!

Our instructor-leaders will also cover a few topics for the novice backpacker along the way like Leave No Trace principles, proper campsite set up, filtering and purifying water, food hanging, and more!

Choose one of the three trip opportunities:
Trip A – FRIDAY NIGHT
2 Day/1-Night Backpacking Trip & Workshops
Trip A will hike the loop in Germantown MetroPark from Friday, April 8th to Saturday, April 9th. We will be hiking 11 miles total* and camping at a backcountry campsite.
Trip B – SATURDAY NIGHT
2 Day/1-Night Backpacking Trip & Workshops
Trip B will be held in Twin Creek MetroPark on Saturday, April 9th to Sunday, April 10th. We will be hiking 10 miles total* and camping at a backcountry campsite.
Trip C – FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHTS
3 Day/2-Night Backpacking Trip & Workshops
Trip C is a “thru-hike” of the Twin Valley Trail from Friday, April 8th to Sunday, April 10th. We will be staying at backcountry campsites both nights and hiking a total of 22 miles*.

WORKSHOP CURRICULUM:
• Pack organization and adjustments
• Water purification
• Waste management, outdoor hygiene & sanitation
• Proper camp set-up
• Food bag hanging techniques
• Minimal navigation – map reading
• Leave No Trace Principles

DATES & TIMES:
Pre-trip meeting required Tuesday, April 5: Pre-Trip Meeting will be held at Great Miami Outfitters’ Broken Paddle Multi-Purpose Classroom from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.  Our instructor-guides will cover logistics and trip details. Attendance is mandatory for all participants.
Trip A – Friday, April 8th to Saturday, April 9th
Trip B Saturday, April 9th to Sunday, April 10th
Trip C Friday, April 8th to Sunday, April 10th
Specific details and times will be discussed at the the Pre-trip meeting. We will meet at the designated trailhead to discuss our route, hiking techniques, and pack adjustments, then hit the trail stopping for lunch on the trail. While on the trail, we’ll take breaks to discuss “Leave No Trace” principles, hands-on water treatment, proper food bag hanging, camp setup, outdoor hygiene & sanitation, hiking techniques and more! We will continue to the campsite where we will set up, and enjoy the evening with meals and conversation.

Cancellation Policy: Full refunds will be issued if canceled by Sunday, March 25th; 50% refund if canceled between March 25th and April 1st. No refund after April 1st.


Trip A – $65 per participant
Friday, April 8th to Saturday, April 9th

Trip B – $65 per participant
Saturday, April 9th to Sunday, April 10th
 

Trip C – $100 per participant
Friday, April 8th to Sunday, April 10th

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
The following items are required for this trip:
• Properly fitting backpack
• Shelter – tent or hammock
• Sleeping system – pad and bag
• Cooking system – stove and cookware
• Moisture-wicking apparel – synthetic or wool
• Properly fitting hiking boots
A full, suggested weekend backpacking checklist is available at the store.

EQUIPMENT OUTFITTING OPTIONS:
Want to try this but you don’t have your own equipment? No problem. You may use our equipment at no additional charge. Limited equipment includes tents, backpacks, pads and stoves, and are available on a first come, first served basis. A checklist is available at the store. Call or stop in for details.

ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements must be met in order to participate in this course. Please let our staff know if you have any issues, concerns or questions.
• The participant must independently participate in all individual skills and activities listed in the course description.
• The participant must be able to effectively communicate with the instructor and other course participants.
• The participant must be able to manage all personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion.
• The participant must be able to manage all personal mobility independently, or with the assistance of a companion.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Is this trip only for beginner backpackers?
No! We welcome experienced, intermediate, and beginner backpackers to share their experiences, tips and tricks!
Will we have a campfire?
No. Campfires are not allowed in Five Rivers MetroParks backcountry sites.
What are the demographics?
People from all walks of life attend our courses and trips. Demographics range from male and females, ages 20 to 70!
How should I physically prepare for the trip?
The best way to practice is to get out and hike! A good tip is to hike with your backpack fully loaded with your gear; your body will become more accustomed to carrying the extra weight.
Is there a prerequisite for this trip?
No, there is no prerequisite class or course for this trip.
Do you have any classes I can take before this trip?
Yes! We have three Introduction to Backpacking Classes scheduled for February 18, March 16, and April 13.  For full details and registration, visit OUR EVENT LIST.
Do I need to pack my own food for this trip?
Yes. Please pack your own meals and snacks for this trip. Further details will be provided at pre-trip meeting.
Will there be water available?
Yes. At some trailheads, there are faucets that operate seasonally. Also, we will practice water filtration and purification!
I see this trip is Waste Free…how can I help?
Thanks for asking!  All of Great Miami Outfitters’ classes, courses, and trips are Waste Free meaning that we re-use, recycle, or compost as much of our waste as possible.  You can help by bringing a re-usable water bottle, cups, eatware, and utensils!

The trail includes over 22 miles of hiking through the beautiful Twin Valley of southwest Montgomery County connecting Germantown MetroPark and Twin Creek MetroPark. Group and secluded backcountry camping (by permit only through Five Rivers MetroParks) allow everyone to experience the wilds of the Twin Valley and this rural corner of Montgomery County like never before!
