Basic Skills: Kayak Rescue & Re-Entry Session

Are you looking to be a more comfortable and confident kayaker? Our ACA-certified instructors are here to help! We have selected key “rescue and re-entry” techniques that we teach in our one-day and two-day courses and incorporated into two different 2-hour sessions. You may take just this Basic session, or you may add the Advance session that follows this session. We offer this unique opportunity to take the full 4-hour course in one day. Take the skills you develop in the Basic session during the first two hours and continue to develop your skills in the second half of the workshop with our Advanced session. Both sessions will be taught in an outdoor pool to allow you an opportunity to practice these skills in order to increase your comfort and confidence in a kayak.

We suggest 15 feet. This will fit a variety of cockpit sizes, then you may cut to fit your particular boat if you choose.

No, both courses are specific to sit-inside kayaks. Please check our website for upcoming sit-on-top kayak courses at
What other items should I bring?
Participants typically enjoy using nose plugs for being in the water. Also, a water shoe or strap on sandal, change of clothes, towel, re-usable water bottle, and snacks.
Are there any prerequisites for this course?
Yes and no. There are no pre-requisites for the Basic Session. However, for the Advanced Session, you must have previously taken a Great Miami Outfitters course.
What are the next courses in the Great Miami Outfitters’ paddling progression? The next courses after a Basic and Advanced  Kayak Rescue and Re-entry Workshop is an Introduction to Kayak Course. During the 8-hour Introduction to Kayak Course, we will cover everything from strokes, to unloading and loading your kayak, to appropriate apparel for different paddling environments!  Additionally, we offer both Essentials of Kayak Touring and Essentials of River Kayaking. These are both 2-day skirted courses, where we practice paddling skills specific to a deep-water lake or moving swiftwater environments!  Pre-registration is required all courses.
