Essentials of Kayak Touring – ACA Level 2

Two day on-water course taught by our certified ACA instructors.
Are you looking to increase your comfort and confidence on larger flat water? Join Great Miami Outfitters in our 2-day Essentials of Kayak Touring Course! Our ACA-certified kayak instructors will build upon skills you learned in the Introduction to Kayaking Course and apply new strokes and maneuvers and rescues in a larger flat water environment. This is a great opportunity to spend 2 days immersed in group discussions with lots of on water practice time to learn and/or enhance your kayak touring skills!

Saturday, July 16 & Sunday, July 17, 2016 – 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Each participant will learn the following:
• Review of Introduction Strokes
• Touring Specific Gear and Uses
• How to pack your kayak for a trip
• Controlled wet exits with skirts
• Importance of Edging and Leaning
• Low and high braces
• Building and adding on to Introduction to Kayaking Strokes and Rescues
• Advanced Rescue and Re-entries – self-rescue and aided techniques
• Advance Maneuvers
• And lots more on water skills and practice!

$40 additional for equipment outfitting services if needed. Includes appropriately fitted kayak with bulkheads, kayak paddle, personal flotation device (PFD) neoprene skirt, paddle float, and bilge pump. Limited availability.
Cancellation Policy
Full refunds will be issued if you cancel prior to Saturday, July 2nd; 50% refund if cancelled between June 2nd and July 9th. No refund after July 9th. If Great Miami Outfitters cancels this course for any reason, a FULL refund will be issued.

The following equipment is required for this course:
• Kayak with at least one bulkhead or bow/stern float
• Kayak Paddle
• Personal Flotation Device (PFD) – Life Vest
• Spray skirt – preferably neoprene
• Sling – 15ft. of 1-inch tubular webbing
• Water shoes – shoes that stay on your feet in your boat and while swimming
• Nose Plugs (optional but recommended)
• Bilge Pump
• Paddle Float

The prerequisite for this course is our Introduction to Kayaking Course. This course is available on May 28 prior to the Essentials of Kayak Touring Course..
In order to participate in this course, each participant must satisfy the following essential eligibility criteria:
• Be able to independently participate in all individual skills and activities listed in the course outline while also maintaining an appropriate and safe body position.
• Be able to hold their breath while under water and, while in the water wearing a properly fitted life jacket, be able to independently turn from a face down to a face up position keeping their head above water.
• Be able to effectively communicate with the instructor and other course participants.
• Be able to manage all personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion.
• Be able to manage all personal mobility independently, or with the assistance of a companion.

How big of water will we be in?
We will be in Caesars Creek Lake near and away from shore. Wind and motor boats can influence waves that we are practicing in.
Will drinking water be provided?
It is recommended to bring at least 2 liters of water per day. We will have a 5 gallon jug to use while supplies last.
Should I pack a lunch?
Yes! We will have a 45 minute break for lunch, so packing a trail lunch for each day is preferred.
I cannot swim…can I still take the course?
The course is designed to make you comfortable and confident in your kayak in the water. All participants will wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Know that our course is “Challenge by Choice” meaning that it is your choice which activities you participate in.
